Reading the Garden in Byzantium: Nature and Sexuality [The author examines a series of texts, particularly Greek romances, in which gardens and women figure. Barber suggests that the male construction of the Byzantine woman is linked to an understanding of the garden. He argues that the dynamic can be read in radically different ways. The male gardener may be seen as being in complete control and dictating what is beautiful to his eye. On the other hand, the garden can be seen as an inbetween spot where male discourse falters and the woman may escape his control. Title note supplied by Feminae.].
